Method and device for control of internal combustion engine variable swirl air fuel intake system with direct helical intake passage

This patent describes an air-fuel mixture intake system, incorporated in an internal combustion engine having a cylinder head which defines a combustion chamber. It consists of an intake port, a downstream end of which opens to the combustion chamber and which includes a helical passage which extends helically around and toward the downstream end and straight passage which extends substantially straight toward the downstream end. The intake passage switchover control valve is convertible between a first position wherein the proportion of intake flow which passes through the straight passage relative to intake flow which passes through the helical passage is minimized, and a second position wherein the proportion is maximized, a control device comprising: a valve drive system including diaphragm means adapted to be actuated by intake vacuum present in an intake manifold of the engine so as to drive the intake passage switchover control valve to the first position when supplied with a certain determinate or greater level of intake vacuum and to drive the intake passage switchover control valve to the second position when supplied with atmospheric pressure, first means for detecting throttle opening; second means for detecting vacuum level present in the intake manifold of the engine; third means for, when the throttle opening detected by the first means increases from below a certain determinate opening value to or above the certain determinate opening value, issuing a first command for the valve drive system to switchover the vacuum switching valve so as to release the diaphragm means to the atmosphere.
