In designing the Alaska Natural Gas Transportation System (ANGTS), pipeline engineers gave thorough consideration to pipe-size selection, the use of existing systems as opposed to new high-pressure systems, compression, loop pipe, cooling vs. additional compression, single or multiple unit compressors, and electric-drive vs. gas-turbine-driven compressors. For the Alberta section of the system, Nova describes the studies involved in optimizing the pipe size, compression requirements, downstream cooling needs, and compressor-driver costs.
