Optical spectra of rare-earth ions in magnesium-aluminum spinel crystals

The authors present the results of their study of optical spectra of rare-earth (RE) ions in magnesium-aluminum spinel crystals. They tabulate data on the composition of charge by content of RE impurities in single crystals, and on transitions in the free ions Tb/sup 3 +/ and Er/sup 3 +/ in the lattice of magnesium aluminum spinel. And they present eight charts of x-ray luminescence and photoluminescence spectra of the crystals for excitation by light at various wavelengths.
