This patent describes a solar crystallizer for producing salt. The crystallizer utilizes a shallow pond containing an aqueous salt solution with a horizontal bottom and exposed to solar radiation. Inlet and outlet conduits are arranged to discharge a saturated brine into the pond and for withdrawing solution in response to a solution level sensing in the bond. The crystallizer contains a supply means to discharge brine through the inlet conduits and a skimmer means to withdraw solution through the outlet conduits. Also described is a saturating means to effect complete saturation of the brine discharged through the inlet conduits. The final component is a control means to respond to the level sensing means through the use of the supply means, the skimmer means and the saturating means.
