Hammer for use in a bore hole and apparatus for use therewith

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5905004

This patent describes an apparatus for drilling a bore hole comprising a hammer and a dual walled drill tube. The hammer is mounted to one end of the tube. The hammer comprises a hammer piston reciprocably coupled to the hammer, fluid flow control means for directing fluid under pressure to the hammer to reciprocably drive the piston and cutting means rotatably coupled to the hammer. The cutting means rotate upon reciprocation of the hammer to cut the bore hole, thereby forming particulate material in the bore hole. Ratchet means are operatively coupled to the cutting means for permitting rotation of the cutting means in one direction only and preventing rotation in an opposite direction. There are means for diverting a portion of the fluid under pressure to entrain and direct the particulate material to the surface of the bore hole.
