Title: Photosynthetic characteristics of reciprocal backcrosses between F/sub 1/ hybrid (C/sub 3/-C/sub 4/ x C/sub 4/) and C/sub 4/ Flaveria species. [Flaveria floridana; Flaveria brownii]

Several biochemical parameters were examined in the reciprocal backcrosses between F/sub 1/ hybrid (F. floridana x F. brownii, number20) and F. brownii. The delta/sup 13/C values of the reciprocal backcrosses are either similar or closer to that of the C/sub 4/ parent: -15.9 per thousand for F/sub 1/ hybrid x F. brownii (number271) and -17.8 per thousand for F. brownii x F/sub 1/ hybrid (number399). The values for F. brownii, the F/sub 1/ hybrid, and F. floridana were -16.1, -22, and -26.6 per thousand, respectively. Consistently, activities of key C/sub 4/ enzymes, PEPC, NADP-MDH, NADP-ME, Asp-AT and Ala-AT were elevated relative to the F/sub 1/ hybrid, approaching that of the C/sub 4/ parent. Furthermore, after 8s of photosynthesis in /sup 14/CO/sub 2/, 79 and 80% of the total soluble /sup 14/C products were C/sub 4/ acids in the backcrosses number271 and number399, respectively, similar to that of the C/sub 4/ parent (78%). The results suggest that C/sub 4/ characteristics were further transferred and expressed in the backcrosses. Anatomical and physiological features will also be characterized to evaluate the overall performance of C/sub 4/ photosynthesis in these backcrosses.
