Prevent corrosion failures in plate heat exchangers

Journal Article · · Chemical Engineering Progress
OSTI ID:590104
This article explains why engineers must pay particular attention to certain aspects of plate exchanger design and how plate exchangers differ from shell-and-tube exchangers in terms of corrosion susceptibility. It then illustrates how to avoid corrosion through a series of actual examples. The examples show the consequences of improper applications or use of incorrect materials. Because corrosion considerations are complex in this equipment, past service experiences are especially valuable in anticipating possible failure mechanisms so that appropriate corrosion control measures may be implemented.
