The feasibility of a fusion power reactor is determined by its economic competitiveness and its environmental and safety performance. The Senior Committee on Environmental, Safety, and Economic Aspects of Magnetic Fusion Energy report has demonstrated the importance of integrating the environmental, safety, and economic issues and has described the large amount of work required in these areas. It is also recommended that environmental and safety should be incorporated into fusion reactor design studies so that these factors can be incorporated into the machine design. In this paper, work by the Berkeley fusion engineering group in developing environmental and safety computational modules is presented. Various aspects of neutron activation, tritium activity, radiological accident doses, and waste disposal are included.
