An operator training simulator (OTS) requires a real time simulation of a power system as seen through an energy management system. The simulation cycle time of a few seconds, needed to match typical scan times of control centers, usually imposes a compromise between modeling accuracy and solution speed. In this paper, a set of models developed specifically for the OTS is described. In a companion paper, the algorithms used to obtain the necessary solution speed are presented together with test results. These models and algorithms are incorporated in a prototype OTS developed for the Electric Power Research Institute. The models in this paper, representing various system components, are adapted to the combination of static and slow dynamic solutions that comprise an OTS.
