Reversible stress-induced martensitic transformation in ZrO/sub 2/

Journal Article · · J. Am. Ceram. Soc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5897846

Optical observations and X-ray measurements were used to detect the martensitic transformation of tetragonal ZrO/sub 2/ to the monoclinic structure during room-temperature stressing of Mg-PSZ. The transformation occurs at stresses as low as approx. =200 MPa and is reversible. Additional observations of transformation around Vickers identations and cracks suggest that application of much higher stresses prevents the reverse transformation on unloading.
