Progress has been made in areas related to fluid flow, heat transfer and alloying element loss during laser welding of stainless steels. The progress is reported under the following headings: weld pool temperature, alloying element vaporization rate, and solute loss; absorption of CO/sub 2/ laser by stainless steels; numerical calculation of fluid flow in laser melted pools; and microstructure of the welded material.
