Under oxygen-limiting conditions La/sub 2/O/sub 3/ is a reasonably selective catalysts for the conversion of methane to ethane and ethylene (C/sub 2/ compounds). At 725 /sup 0/C a selectivity to C/sub 2/ compounds of 47% was achieved at a CH/sub 4/ conversion of 9.4%. Although La/sub 2/O/sub 3/ is very effective in the generation of gas-phase CH/sub 3/ x radicals, which are believed to be intermediates in the oxidative dimerization, the catalyst also is active for the complete oxidation of C/sub 2/H/sub 6/ under the reaction conditions. Higher reaction temperatures favor C/sub 2/H/sub 4/ which may be formed from C/sub 2/H/sub 6/ via gas phase reactions. 25 references, 2 figures, 3 tables.
