As a result of rising fuel costs, many ship operators are turning to less expensive, heavier grade fuels for their diesel engines. Use of these lower quality fuels without adequate preparation can cause increased engine wear and damage to fuel systems. The oil properties which affect pretreatment and cleaning requirements, specifications that should be used when purchasing these fuels, and procedures for confirming that bought fuels meet purchase specifications are discussed.
