At the Danish power plant Skaerbaekvaerket a demonstration plant for the SNOX flue gas cleaning process has been in operation for about 2 1/2 years. The SNOX process is a combined SO{sub 2}/NO{sub x} removal process which has been developed by Haldor Topsoe. In the process 95% of the sulphur and nitrogen oxides in the flue gas can be removed, and the end product is concentrated sulfuric acid with an acid strength of about 95%. The process has four main steps. At first, the dust content of the flue gas is removed in a bag filter. In the second step, NO{sub x} is reduced by selective catalytic reduction by NH{sub 3}. In the third step, SO{sub 2} is oxidized to SO{sub 3} in a catalytic process, and in the last step concentrated sulfuric acid condenses in a glass tube heat exchanger. On the basis of the satisfactory operation experience with the demonstration plant it has been decided to build a full-scale SNOX-plant at a 300 MWe power plant in Denmark.
