How to estimate payback from cogeneration systems - quickly

Explains a method for comparing the cost of cogenerating steam and electricity with the cost of the more traditional approach of producing on-site steam and purchasing electric power from a utility. Fundamental differences between cogeneration plants and conventional steam plants are given. Main costs that need to be determined for the comparison are steam-production, offset power from the utility, cogenerated electric power, and incremental capital. Presents calculations for determining differences in capital and operating costs.
