The selection of MHR design features evolved from a collaborative effort by the Department of Energy, US utilities, reactor vendors, and national laboratories. Emphasis was placed on inherent, passive safety, high availability and competitive economics. The resulting design provides significant enhancement in safety for nuclear electricity generation. Under a separate program, this technology is being considered for defense material production. Technology spin-off from that program would accelerate the commercial effort. In the longer term, the MHR offers unique applications as a high-temperature nuclear heat source.
