He/sup -/ photodetachment; effects of the 1s 2p 2p. /sup 4/p /SUP e/ resonance

He/sup -/ exists in a metastable state, (1s2s2p)/sup 4/P /SUP o/, lying 19.74 eV above He(1/sup 1/S), with substate lifetimes of 10-500 ..mu..s. Following a preliminary survey of the photodetachment cross section over a range of energies, the authors have concentrated on a large shape resonance associated with the first excited state of He/sup -/, 1s2p2p' /sup 4/P /SUP e/, which recent calculations have found to lie just above He(2/sup 3/P). The resonance has a profound effect on the overall photodetachment spectrum.
