Spray dry scrubbing for SO/sub 2/ removal from flue gases is an attractive alternative to conventional wet scrubbing. In this process, a solution of a reactive absorbent such as sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate, or lime is sprayed into the flue gas. The droplets and gas mix in a large reaction chamber. While the spray droplets evaporate, they absorb and react with SO/sub 2/. Quickly, the droplets dry to form a powder. When the gases are pulled from the reactor, the powder and any flyash are collected in a fabric filter. The absorbent powder cake on the filter cloth continues to slowly absorb SO/sub 2/ from the flue gases. Spray dry scrubber systems have several advantages in comparison to conventional wet scrubbing systems. These include lower capital costs, decreased corrosion and scaling, and the elimination of wet sludge. The principal drawback of the spray dry system is a lower rate of SO/sub 2/ removal which may necessitate a more reactive absorbent than in conventional wet systems and may require operation at a high stoichiometric ratio of absorbent to sulfur dioxide to achieve a specified SO/sub 2/ removal efficiency. The simplicity of this approach has led to dozens of orders for spray dry SO/sub 2/ control systems for both utility and industrial boilers. This paper presents experimental data on drying and SO/sub 2/ absorption for single drops of an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate. These data are compared to a simple theoretical model that describes the evaporation and the absorption of SO/sub 2/ in the first drying period.
