Ablaze: The story of the heroes and victims of Chernobyl
This is a book about the accident at the Chernobyl reactor number 4. Work on this book was begun in early 1991, following many of the political changes inside the USSR, and as a consequence the western author was able to gain access to information, and people, who were not available to earlier authors. The book looks briefly at the Russian nuclear program, looks in much more detail at the accident, what lead up to it, the accident itself, the immediate response, and follow up. It examines the impact of the accident on the people involved, the area around the plant, that part of the USSR, and the world as a whole. It looks at the reasons behind the USSR nuclear program, and the implications for nuclear power generation, and needs, within the USSR. It tries to give a balanced view of the magnitude of the problem, weighed against the energy needs of the country, and the pervasive fear of nuclear energy.
