Transmission line tower analysis and design in review

Journal Article · · IEEE Trans. Power Appar. Syst.; (United States)
This paper presents a review of the state of the art and practice of transmission line tower design with specific attention to structure loading conditions, comparison of results using different tower analysis techniques and a commentary on some criteria of the ASCE Manual 52 ''Guide For Design of Steel Transmission Towers.'' This paper also discusses some of the items causing variations between design and tower test, (due to variation in yield strength and rolling tolerances) and variations between results of the same structure if tested at varied test sites. Finally future research and testing programs are recommended as well as requiring that the detailer show all resulting eccentricities.
