Vibrationally excited I/sub 2/(X; ..mu mu..'' = 33-44) has been observed in the reaction region of I/sub 2/(X; ..mu mu..'' = 0) + O/sub 2/(/sup 1/..delta..). A flow tube reactor and an LIF technique were used to obtain laser excitation spectra of vibrationally excited I/sub 2/. In the region of maximum LIF intensity, the population density reached a maximum at ..mu..'' = 35, with approximately 0.02% of all I/sub 2/(X) in the levels (33 < ..mu..'' less than or equal to 44). Vibrationally excited I/sub 2/ appeared to be a precursor of I/sup */ according to flow tube temporal profile studies. Inferences concerning I/sub 2/ dissociation in oxygen-iodine lasers are discussed. 17 references, 5 figures.
