Triaxial tests on salt rocks

Triaxial tests on various salt rocks were conducted, and Mohr's envelope of stress determined, as a preliminary measure before determining the necessary dimensions of pillars in salt mines and assessing the liability of the salt to possible rockburst. The stress-deformation characteristics of different salt rocks found to vary considerably, to the extent that from the aspect of mine design it is unwise to attribute general behavior to all salt deposits. Salt designated as carnallitite behaved substantially elastically and displayed brittle fracture under confining pressures up to at least 100 kp/sq cm. Rock salt, and hard salt, containing sylvite, rock salt, and anhydrite, only demonstrated brittle fracture under low confining pressure. At high confining pressure, fracture only occurred in these salts after considerable inelastic deformation. It appears that salt rocks of the carnallitic class have a greater liability to rock burst than the other salts tests.
