Static and transition densities are calculated for the ground states and low-lying collective states of the spherical nuclei /sup 40/Ca, /sup 48/Ca, /sup 90/Zr, and /sup 208/Pb, and also the positions of these states and the reduced transition probabilities. The calculation was carried out in a self-consistent manner in terms of the RPA method based on the Hartree-Fock ground state with the Skyrme S1 and BLV1 interactions. The properties of the static and transition densities obtained have been studied in calculations of the cross sections for elastic and inelastic scattering of fast electrons and protons. These cross sections were calculated by means of a phase-shift analysis for electrons and by means of the Glauber theory for protons.
