This quarterly progress report covers the work performed during the period October 1-December 31, 1984 on the Fluid Seals Development for Coal Liquefaction Slurry Pumps Program. The work was sponsored by the Department of Energy, Pittsburgh Technology Center, to develop technology for hydrostatic fluid seals to be used in coal slurry centrifugal and reciprocating pumps. The scope of the program consists of the following tasks: (1) Task 1A, survey of current practices for centrifugal and reciprocating coal slurry pump seals; (2) Task 1B, preliminary evaluation of three alternative centrifugal and reciprocating fluid seal concepts; (3) Task 2, detail evaluation of the best two centrifugal and reciprocating fluid seal concepts; (4) Task 3A, design and fabrication of the selected centrigfugal and reciprocating fluid seal concept, design and fabrication of the centrifugal and reciprocating seal testers; (5) Task 3B, laboratory seal testing of the centrifugal and reciprocating fluid seals; (6) Task 4, field testing of the centrifugal and reciprocating fluid seals. Tasks 1, 2, 3A, and 3B have been completed. Task 4 is pending Department of Energy approval. 1 fig., 3 tabs.
