A discussion of railroad lubrication covers: the diesel engine, for which the railroad industry requires 4 billion gal/yr of diesel fuel; crankcase lubricating oil, 5 million gal/yr of which is used by a major railroad; analytical procedures for lubricants to determine wear and contamination trends; locomotive roller bearing greases, usually lithium-based and containing rust, oxidation, and EP additives; traction motor gear lubricants, including the early compounded residual oils and sodium soap-thickened, petroleum resin-based lubricants, and the recently developed, improved lithium-soap thickened lubricants; freight car journal grease specifications of the Association of American Railroads; and new lubricants being evaluated for railroad use, including MoS/sub 2/ pellets for center plates, and release agents for unloading coal in cold weather.
