New methods being developed to field inspect plastic joints

The ultimate objective of this Gas Research Institute (GRI) research is to develop a portable NDE system to assist polyethylene (PE) pipe installers in detecting heat-fusion joint flaws. It is expected that this system will complement the current visual inspection techniques so that high quality PE pipe systems are installed as gas distribution mains and services. It is pointed out that of the nearly 25,000 miles of new gas distribution mains and services installed each year in the US, over 80% is PE pipe.
