Observation of hypernuclear. gamma. rays in /sup 7//sub. lambda. /Li and /sup 9//sub. lambda. /Be

Gamma rays were observed in the decays of the p-shell ..lambda.. hypernuclei/sup 7//sub ..lambda../Li and /sup 9//sub ..lambda../Be, formed in excited states with 823 MeV/c kaons through the reaction: /sup A/X(K/sup -/,..pi../sup -/)/sup A//sub ..lambda../X. The energies of the ..gamma.. rays observed are compared with those predicted from the level spacing in an existing shell model theory which takes into account the effect of the ..lambda.. on the nuclear core states through the spin-orbit and the spin-spin parts of the strong ..lambda..-nucleus interaction. Cross sections for the production of these ..lambda.. hypernuclei are estimated from the data.
