The interaction of helicons and ion-acoustic waves in a plasma slab with random, three-dimensional density inhomogeneities is studied. The corresponding equations for the wave amplitudes are derived. In the approximation in which the field of the helicon pump is given and assumed to decay exponentially, solutions are found for the amplitudes of the oppositely directed helicon and the ion sound. These solutions are expressed in terms of Bessel and Neumann functions. The numerical and analytic solutions of the system of equations for the wave amplitudes are compared. The damping of the average field is resonant in nature; i.e., the helicon energy passes into the damped plasma waves and ultimately into heat, so that the behavior of the average fields reflects the energetics of the system.
