Topics in loop space

Several topics are considered in the loop space formulation of non-abelian gauge theories. The renormalization group equations for loops with cross points are derived and their exact behavior as the length approaches zero is determined. An explicit calculation is done in the U(2) theory. Next we sketch the general proof of the Migdal-Makeenko equation and show its validity explicitly in a detailed calculation to 4th order in perturbation theory. Then we consider the connection between Migdal-Makeenko equations and Mandelstam constraints in two dimensions. We show how the latter follow automatically from the equations and therefore do not have to be imposed upon the Wilson loops by hand. Finally in the last chapter we derive the finite temperature Schwinger-Dyson equations to leading and next to leading order and use them to make interesting observations about large N gauge theory at finite temperature. We conclude that the deconfining phase transition at large N is 1st order.
