Modular design expands applications of pumped storage
- Pacific Turbine Systems, Inc., San Francisco, CA (US)
Pumped storage is widely recognized as the most efficient available technology for the storage of electrical energy. Escalating regulatory difficulties, together with high costs and long construction times, however, have led many utilities to abandon pumped storage as a resource option. Modular hydroelectric pumped storage (MHPS) is a proprietary design approach revolving around two man-made reservoirs which standardizes major components of plant engineering and construction. Key elements of the design are outlined, new applications of pumped storage resulting from this approach are discussed, and preliminary indications of the effect of the design approach on permitting, costs and schedules are presented.
