Lubricated wear of steel-ceramic and ceramic-ceramic systems

Thesis/Dissertation ·

Lubrication and wear of steel-ceramic and ceramic-ceramic systems are studied using the four-ball wear tester and data for the steel-steel system obtained for comparison. In general, the sliding wear for steel-on-ceramic systems is less than that for the steel-on-steel system under the same test conditions. The increasing hardness of ceramics may be partially responsible for the reduction of wear. For the steel-ceramic systems, most of the lubrication products are generated form the chemical reactions of iron with the lubricants and the oxygen in the environment.
