Intermediate production of a. delta. /sup -/ isobar in the production of. pi. /sup 0/ and eta mesons by 3. 2-GeV/c. pi. /sup -/ mesons in xenon nuclei

An attempt is made to estimate the cross section for the intermediate production of a ..delta../sup -/ isobar in ..pi../sup -/+n (A) ..--> pi../sup 0/(eta)+..delta../sup -/+A' reactions. Upper limits are found for the cross sections: 965 +- 229 ..mu..b for the reaction with ..pi../sup 0/ mesons and 116 +- 37 ..mu..b for the reaction with eta mesons.
