Well-site geological data from either the well-site geologist or the hydrocarbon well logger traditionally have been presented as a log on film or paper. Facsimile transmission often has been used to transfer these logs from the well site to the operator's office. With increasing computerization in oil and gas exploration, the ability to integrate geological data obtained from well logs with wireline and drilling engineering data is necessary to permit end users to obtain a complete geo-engineering history of the well. Therefore, recognized standards for formatting geological data are required to permit service companies and oil and gas companies to communicate, regardless of vendor or operator. The International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) established a subcommittee of the Rig Instrumentation and Measurement (RIM) committee in 1985 to formulate industry standards for transmission of many data sets from the well site to the workstation. The standard has been finalized as the Well-Site Information Transfer Standards (WITS). This paper addresses the relevance of this recommended standard to geological data.
