Conference · · Soc. Pet. Eng. AIME, Pap.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5876259
Shell Oil Company currently is operating a large waterflood project in the Permian San Andres dolomite reservoir of the Denver Unit located in west Texas. The project consists of some 870 producers and 340 injectors, with current oil production rate, water production rate, and water injection rate, respectively, of 133,000 bopd, 225,000 bwpd, and 536,000 bwpd. In addition to major infill drilling programs, which have been underway for the past several years, a substantial remedial and reconditioning program has been conducted with some 250 jobs currently per year. Highlights of production technology and experience gained in this project are presented. Completion philosophies (e.g., barefoot vs. steel or fiberglass cased hole completions and single vs. dual completions) are discussed. Results of well stimulation by acid treatment utilizing short-spaced straddle packers in cased hole completions vs. diverting agents with use of inflatable packets in open-hole completions are analyzed, along with perforation density and treatment size. Injection profile conformance improvements in injection wells by employing relatively inexpensive methods that have been innovated in the course of performing the project are presented.
