In an effort to accurately characterize and develop a more fundamental understanding of interlaminar shear failures in laminated graphite-epoxy composites a test method capable of inducing a prescribed state of pure interlaminar shear stress within a certain region of a test specimen has been devised. A novel method of monitoring shear failures in coupon-type flexure specimens is used to determine the initiation site, direction of propagation, and approximate crack propagation speed of the resulting shear failures.
