Interstellar abundance derived from IUE data. I. Silicon depletions toward reddened stars

The International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) has the capability of acquiring interstellar line data for a large number of stars, reaching substantially greater column densities than previous instruments, and accordingly we are undertaking wide-ranging surveys of abundances for species particularly well suited to IUE's wavelength coverage and spectral resolution. In the process, a complex package of interactive computer programs has been developed to facilitate the efficient analysis of data on large numbers of stars. This program package, along with results on Si ii column densities towards two moderately reddened stars, is decribed. For both stars, substantial silicon depletions are inferred.
