Preparation of small dense thoria crucibles

A method is described for making small dense thoria crucibles with 2 percent of zirconia added as a flux. Crucibles were pressed from a composition containing a water-soluble wax used as an internal body lubricant. The wax was then burned out and the crucibles fired to 1800/sup 0/C. The importance of the original properties of the raw material in regard to the ease of producing crucibles is discussed.
