Experiments on the scattering of a CO/sub 2/ laser beam by space-charge waves of an ion beam are reported. The waves are excited in a decaying plasma with a density of 10/sup 10/--10/sup 12/ cm/sup 3/ and an electron temperature of 1--3 eV. The wave phase velocity is close to the ion beam velocity and may significantly exceed the ion acoustic velocity. The wavelengths are 2--4 mm at a wave frequency of 4 MHz. Data obtained on the waves by a probe method are compared with data obtained from laser scattering. This comparison yields an estimate of the sensitivity and spectral resolution of the use of the scattering of a CO/sub 2/ laser beam to determine oscillations in the electron density. The sensitivity of the diagnostic technique developed here is deltanapprox.10/sup 8/ cm/sup -3/ (deltan is the amplitude of the density oscillations), and the resolution in terms of wave number is ..delta..k = 2.5 cm/sup -1/.
