Effect of moisture on the diffusion of organic molecules in coal

The results of the present study confirm the importance of establishing and reporting carefully the moisture content of any coal that is the subject of diffusion rate and/or swelling rate measurements. Likewise, it is important to report carefully how a sample may have been dried, prior to these measurements, since such low temperature procedures also may influence the results. It may be concluded from the present work that moisture will swell coals of bituminous, subbituminous, and lignite ranks. This swelling will permit faster penetration and swelling of the coal structure by organic liquid diffusants. The activation energies observed for such swelling processes are reduced, as the effective glass transition temperature of the coals are increased, either by drying or pyrolysis.
