Gulf Science and Technology Co. this week will finish an initial 21-day test burn in the development of an in situ coal gasification process near Rawlins, Wyoming. Gulf is using the process in a steeply dipped coal seam which is not economically minable by other methods. The resulting gas, when produced with oxygen, can be converted into synthetic natural gas, methanol, ammonia or liquid fuels. This seam, located in the N. Knobs area, 8 miles west of Rawlins, was ignited at about 400 ft below ground at the intersection of 2 slant wells. The steeply dipping coal bed is expected to prove easier to gasify due to the chimney effect caused by the natural collapse of fresh coal into the combustion zone. The test is being conducted under a 5-yr, $13.5-million contract, awarded in 1977 by the US Department of Energy. Objectives are to produce an average of 4.5 mmcfd of gas, to monitor the burning action of the process, using air injection and oxygen injection separately, and to study the environmental impact.
