Optimization of Q-switched lasers

This paper reports on the performance of a Q-switched laser at a fixed pump power that can be optimized through the proper choice of output coupler. Using the rate equations, the authors derive simple expressions for the maximum peak power, maximum pulse energy, and minimum pulsewidth of a single Q-switched output pulse; the maximum power efficiency of a repetitively Q-switched laser; and the corresponding cavity output couplings.
