Selective removal of H/sub 2/S from an H/sub 2/S and CO/sub 2/ containing gas stream

A method and apparatus are described for selectively removing H/sub 2/S from an H/sub 2/S and CO/sub 2/ containing gas stream which has a variable flow rate. The absorption apparatus is divided into two connected individual absorption volumes in which the gas and absorbent solution can countercurrently contact each other and has means to control the passage of the fluid streams through the individual absorption volumes.
