This patent describes a casing packer for sealing the annulus between a well casing and a tube extending therein by direct application of radial force to a seal element. The packer consists of a tubular mandrel; means, mounted on the mandrel, for engaging the casing to lock the mandrel in place at the location; and means, mounted on the mandrel, for sealing the annulus between the mandrel and the casing, consisting of: a seal element formed of permanently deformable, nonelastomeric material; first and second wedges; means for driving the first wedge axially to drive the second wedge radially outward and thereby drive the seal element radially outward beyond the elastic limit of the seal element, to permanently deform the seal element against the casing by direct application of radial force to the seal element; and means for withdrawing the first wedge radially inward to permit the seal element to deform inwardly in response to interference between the seal element and the well casing during removal of the casing packer from the well casing.
