Title: Synthesis and structures of main group cage compounds containing boron, silicon, and phosphorus atoms

The reactions of lithium salts [(i-Pr[sub 2]N)[ovr BP(H)B(N-i-Pr[sub 2])P]Li[center dot]DME] and [tmp[ovr BP(H)B(tmp)P]Li[center dot]DME] (tmp = 2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethylpiperidino) with organylhalosilanes have been surveyed, and silyl-substituted diphosphadiboretanes of the general types R[sub 2]N[ovr BP(H)B(NR[sub 2])P]SiR'[sub 3](R[sub 2]N = i=Pr[sub 2]N, tmp; SiR'[sub 3] = SiMe[sub 2]Ph) and R[sub 2]N[ovr BP(H)B(NR[sub 2])P]SiR'tCl (R[sub 2]N = i-Pr[sub 2]N, tmp; SiR'[sub 2]Cl = SiMe[sub 2]Cl, SiPh[sub 2]Cl, SiPh[sub 2]Cl, Me[sub 2]SiSiMe[sub 2](Cl)) have been isolated and characterized. Dehydrohalogenation of the latter class of compounds with t-BuLi provides an efficient route to new bicyclic cage compounds P[sub 2](BNR[sub 2])[sub 2](SiR[sub 2]) and P[sub 2](BNR[sub 2])[sub 2][Si(R)[sub 2]SiR[sub 2]]. Alternatively, the cage compounds P[sub 2](tmpB)[sub 2]SiR[sub 2](R[sub 2] = Ph[sub 2], Me[sub 2], Ph(Me)) have been obtained by combination of the dipotassium salt K[sub 2][tmp[ovr BPB(tmp)P]] and R[sub 2]SiCl[sub 2]. The coordination chemistry of the ligands has been surveyed, and a series of Fe(CO)[sub 4][center dot]L complexes has been isolated. Attempts to form bimetallic complexes were unsuccessful. The structural features of these cage compounds are compared with data from cages of the type P[sub 2](BNR[sub 2])[sub 3].
