Title: The sintering of supported metal catalysts-2. Comparison of sintering rates of supported Pt, Ir, Rh catalysts in hydrogen and oxygen

Journal Article · · J. Catal.; (United States)

Ten alumina-supported catalysts containing 0.5 or 2% Pt, 2% Ir, 0.5 or 1% Rh, or 0.5 or 1% Ru were treated at 500/sup 0/-800/sup 0/C for up to 16 hr in oxygen and hydrogen, and the relative stability towards sintering was determined by hydrogen adsorption before and after thermal treatment. The results showed that the stability decreased in the order Rh > Pt > Ir > Ru in oxygen, and Ir > Ru > Rh > Pt in hydrogen, in agreement with predictions based on molecular transport of metal oxides in oxygen and heats of sublimation (i.e., also molecular migration) in hydrogen.
