This patent describes a catalyst for methanol conversion by a combination of steaming and acid-extraction. In the process for the conversion of methanol to hydrocarbons, methanol is contained at elevated temperatures over a zeolite catalyst characterized by a silica-to-alumina ratio of at least 12 and a Constraint Index within the approximate range of 1 to 12. The improvement consists of extruding zeolite with silica and thereafter subjecting the extruded zeolite to steaming at a temperature of from 400/sup 0/C to 600/sup 0/C for 2 to 100 hours and acid-extraction.
