Material property measurements of PZT-5A-type piezoelectric ceramics

Knowing the material properties of a piezoelectric element is the first essential step for its application to transducer construction. This is particularly true for fabricated ceramics because of property variations due to the nature of the process by which they are manufactured. Moreover, the material constants quoted by manufacturers are often incomplete and sometimes inaccurate. In this paper, complete material properties of four PZT-5A-type ceramics are measured by means of a combined application of well-known methods: capacitance measurements, ultrasonic time-of-flight measurements, and resonance frequency analyses of modal vibrations.
