This work, part of the ANL energy program for DOE, is directed toward support studies for the national endeavor on in situ coal gasification. The objective is to determine the reaction-controlling variables and reaction kinetics for gasification of chars resulting when coal is pyrolyzed in underground gasification. The reactions being studied include steam-char, CO/sub 2/-char, H/sub 2/-char, and the water gas shift reaction. Kinetic data related to the reaction of steam with Hanna and Wyodak subbituminous coals are presented here. In addition, the catalytic effects of coal mineral matter on the water gas shift reaction and the effects of brackish water on the steam-char reaction rates are discussed.
