Kinetic and deuterium tracer studies on the isomerization of 1-butene, cis-2-butene, and trans-2-butene on zinc oxide showed that the reactions were zero order in butene at 0/sup 0/-50/sup 0/C; that the reaction changed to first order kinetics and a Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism in the nonlinear region of the adsorption isotherm at higher temperatures; and that direct cis- to trans-butene conversion occurred without a 1-butene intermediate. The results were consistent with the mechanism developed by Kokes and coworkers, which involves the syn- and anti-m-allyls as intermediates. Tracer studies also revealed that intermolecular exchange, involving surface hydroxyls, was more important on alumina than on zinc oxide, but that isomerization probably proceeds by the same mechanism as on zinc oxide.
