The state-of-the-art of solar-powered air conditioning is reviewed and its potential for South African conditions examined. Three basic cycles, namely the absorption cycle, the Rankine cycle and desiccant cycle are discussed and their advantages and disadvantages compared. The open-cycle type desiccant systems which appear to be well suited for South African conditions are discussed in greater detail. Included is a review of the various system configurations with solid and liquid desiccants and a comparison of their performance under different climatic conditions.
